There's definitely an advantage of the new 5D Mark II's higher MP resolution but quality should be comparable, when maintaining similar camera settings and using the same lens.

An acquaintance, whom I met at a grand-prix event, owns both camera bodies and uses his 5D Mark II for weddings and studio photo shoots and his 1D Mark III strictly for sports-related photography. He said he prefers the 5D Mark II over his old 1Ds Mark II, specially when it only costs a fraction of the pro-body, but would not give up the versatility (based on burst speed; AF points; dual memory capacity; and battery life) of his Mark III.

Now that all prices are dropping for these cameras and with Canon's introduction of their brand new EOS 7D [link] I would not be surprised if an upgraded 1D Mark IV is on its way within the next year.
