 :boogie: :sun: SUMMERTIME! :sun: :boogie:

Greetings from the nature-friendly state of Ohio!  This year started with tons of snow in winter followed by lots of rain in spring…  It's now summer and here comes the sun!

My organic garden is thriving once again and the current harvest of cherries is better than ever!  Also got many species of bees back with frequent visits from regional butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies during the day.  At dusk, the lighting bugs take over and exhibit their usual light show.  Occasionally, a fledgling may be spotted hopping around the herbs with their parents nearby.

Thanks for watching, expect lots of new photos to come!

Be well!

No sun at all?

The mid 70's to low 80's temperature seems ideal for many plants in my garden.  We get good amount of heavy rainfall from time to time, but the sun always shines after the rain.  I have already gotten sunburn while running and biking.

Thanks for the feature!

A drought was predicted for this summer - weather proved that wrong lately. The spring did start out pretty dry, and it did not rain when we really needed it to (which resulted in caterpillars eating EVERYTHING). I am east of you in PA. We have been getting a lot of rain, but my area has not been getting slammed *as much* with the severe thunderstorms. My garden is loving the rain. Nothing beats actual rain water and before this, my rain barrel was running dry. Now I can't use it quick enough.

Welcome, really enjoy your wildlife shots.  I'll have to check out some of the nature parks where you go someday.  You tend to some many species that don't normally venture into our area.

Haha…  Good to hear someone else is utilizing rain water for irrigation.  Young plants in my garden thrive on it!

Ooohh... the parks around Lake Erie. If you haven't been to Magee Marsh during spring migration, you MUST go. There is a reason why I have been driving eight hours (one way) there for the past four years. Oak Openings has a lot of the specialties though (Blue Grosbeak, Summer Tanager, Lark Sparrow...)

Magee is definitely our favorite migration spot.  Been going there during peak migration week every spring for the past six years.  See a lot of warblers, raptors, and swans.  We had our record sighting of species in 2014…  This year was extremely warm and somehow the warblers weren't as visible.

Presque Isle State Park (Erie, PA) is a nice place for waterfowls.  Sometimes they arrive by the thousands…  Many of them arrive to our area in northeast OH about a week or so before they make it there. This year I also had some luck finding a variety of ducks around a metro park just few miles from where I live.

I agree that this year was not great for migration - both in Ohio and eastern PA where I am. The variety was there, but not the numbers.

Some parts of the state gets more snow/rain than others.  Here in the northeast we get occasional heavy rainfall and sometimes even hail in the summer but the sun shines eventually.  :)

We are fortunate enough to live in an area near creeks and ponds.  Lots of little critters venturing into our yard in spring and summer months.

Beautiful feature. I've just moved house so adjusting to my new garden, seems to have the same problem as the last with an infestation of slugs and snails that eat all of my hard work! There's lots of bugs, and lots of birds (even with all of the neighbourhood cats visiting), and what I now suspect to be a plum tree, so we must be doing well. Weather's not been too great for the plants this summer, sometimes sunny but mostly overcast with a lot of wind which seems to be scorching them :(

Yep, so much depends on weather…  Sometimes the solution could be just as easy as planting a tree to provide shade for "partial sun" plants…  Well, usually it takes a few years for the tree to grow but you get the idea.

Some plants thrive in full sun while others require more water than others.  On hot sunny days, I try to water part of my garden early morning and in the evening (particularly young plants).

I use organic liquid soaps to keep bugs off…  Simply spray on leaves, fruits and/or flowers and this seems to keep most of those pests away.  In the past I have also released praying mantis or ladybugs in problem areas and these predatory insects do keep plant eating ones in control.

Best of luck in your new garden!

I think the way my house is positioned no plant is in full sun the whole day, some are in partial most of the time. It's not really necessary for two waterings here, most of the time I only need to do one every two days (but then again I think my climate is very different to yours!)

Do the soaps keep the slugs off? I have heard of people use washing-up liquid, but I didn't know why they used it. I only found one plant with aphids, haven't seen many ladybirds this year for some reason.

Thank you!

Yes, liquid soap spray will rid of slugs if you hit them directly.  Similarly you could also mix salt and water in a spray bottle...  As they absorb the solution it quickly disintegrates the slugs' digestive system.

Also try spreading some ground coffee around the base of young plants... Caffeine acts as a natural toxin when slugs come in contact with it.

Another natural way to prevent slugs from eating your plants is to spread crushed egg shells around the stems.  The shells work like sharp blades that cut them as they approach the plant stem.

Good luck! :)

I'll try the soap.
I don't want to use salt, it's not good for the plants / soil balance.
I have been using coffee, it seems to have some success.

I don't really eat a lot of eggs - I did try stones and sharp sand but again it didn't seem to stop them.

I think I just have super hardy mutant slugs!
